Home Evening Lesson--Family History. History of my great-grandmother, daughter of a slave-owner

Elizabeth Annie Almira Land (Written by John Quincy Blaylock, my grandmother's brother, and Annie B.)

Born Nov. 18, 1847 (Laura, did you notice that date?) in Moore's Bridge, Tuscaloosa Co., Alabama, a beautiful black-haired girl, the daughter of Enos Carrol Land and Almira Keith.

She was the ninth child of a family of five boys and six girls. They were: Mary Louise, William Jeremiah, John Franklin, Emily Frances, James Thomas, Joseph, Sarah Lucinda, Annie Almira Elizabeth, Benjamin Carroll, Martha Jane, and Rhoda Isabella.

All were born in Moore's Bridge, Tuscaloosa Co., Alabama.

Enos Carroll Land was a plantation owner and slave holder in Alabama. After the Civil War, without his slaves, financial losses came and he was compelled to move to Lodi, Mississippi, where, without his slaves, his children, his boys and his girls, were forced to do the workto raise the corn, the sweet potatoes, yams, cotton, goobers (peanuts), etc.

I have a vivid memory of going to the woods with my Uncles Ben, Joe, John, Bill, and Jim to round up the hogs and heat the rocks and scald the hogs in barrels or vats. After this they were butchered and salted, and hung in the smoke house, where the hams, shoulders, and sides were hung over the smoke from corn cobs and oak chips until the meat was thoroughly cured. The back bones and other waste parts were made into sausage.

I enjoyed going into the Milk House with mother, too. There was a cool spring in the Milk House, which kept the house cool. How cold and sweet the milk which was poured into rows of pans and crocks and set in the shelves to cool. Even after the milk soured, we loved the clabber after seasoning it up. The milk made the most delicious lumps of butter and yummy buttermilk. Yes, the milk house was a favorite resort for us boys and girls, even the men and others, especially during the hot summer days.

(There is more to this history. If you would like the rest of it, I would be happy to email it to you.)

Famous
So, for those who don't follow Jill's blog, if you want some good prime-time entertainment, our family is going to be on a tv show tonight on BYUTV. Click here to go go Jill's blog to read more about it.

Laura: I was able to watch it! You guys were fantastic. I think I will require a DVD autographed by all the Dickey Family mealtime stars. Bravo!

DADickey: Speaking of famous, I might add that if you go to wikipedia and type in "voice male", a site will come up with none other than Darin Dickey's name.

I am still working in the medical profession. I plan to work until the year 2050 then I'll retire. I spent the winter at the gymnasium working on my fitness. I am living in a third floor penthouse suite at mountain place with the best view of the Logan Temple, right in the middle of the city. I made a movie about my work experience and the official press release will be in 2020.
Thanks, Trevin D.

Laura: Sounds like you're having fun, staying fit, and have a good life plan! I can't wait to see the press release in ten years. It was so fun to see you at Christmas! Love you, Laura
